John 14:15
Christ's Consolatory Discourse. In this part, Jesus not only gives his disciples comforting promises, but he also promises to send them the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s special role is to help them remember and understand Jesus’ teachings and to be their Comforter after Jesus leaves.v. 15: Jesus reminds his disciples of their duty: If you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15 a). Obeying Jesus’ commands means living a godly life and faithfully doing the work he gives. Jesus gives this reminder right when he is comforting them, showing that true comfort comes when we follow him. When the disciples worry about the future, Jesus tells them to focus on doing what he says each day. Instead of just feeling sad about Jesus leaving, they should show their love by obeying him in everything. All the promises Jesus gives, including answered prayer and the coming of the Comforter, are for those who follow his commands out of love. Jesus is an advocate only for those who listen to him and do what he says.
