‏ John 14:18

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

In this section, Jesus comforts His disciples by promising that He will not leave them alone after He goes away. He explains that He will send the Holy Spirit to be with them. Jesus teaches that those who love Him will keep His commandments and that the Father and the Son will make their home with those who obey. The Holy Spirit will teach the disciples and remind them of everything Jesus has said. Jesus also reassures them with the promise of His peace, even though He will soon leave the world.

v. 18: Jesus promises, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” He means that even though He will soon die and return to the Father, He will not abandon His followers. He will come to them through the presence of the Holy Spirit, and eventually when He returns at the end of time (John 14:18 a).
