He tells the disciples they will be rejected by their religious community and even killed. Some people will think they are serving God by doing this. This persecution will come both from religious leaders and from civil authorities. Many of Jesus’ followers will be treated as outsiders or even enemies. Even though people claim to serve God, they can do terrible things in his name, just as Paul later did before he became a believer (Isaiah 66:5 ).
