‏ Lamentations 3:55

God's Goodness Acknowledged; An Appeal to God

Throughout this chapter, the prophet struggles between feelings of sadness and hope. Sometimes he complains, but then he encourages himself by trusting in God. In the end, faith wins, and he finds comfort. In these verses, he remembers how God has helped him before and asks God to act with justice against his enemies. He shares his own experience to give hope to others and shows how we can turn to God even when we feel hopeless.

v. 55: The prophet remembers calling out to God from a very low place. He says, I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon . Even when he felt trapped and close to death, like Jonah in the belly of the fish (Jonah 2:1 a), he still prayed to God. This shows that no matter how low we feel, we can always reach out to God (Psalm 130:1 b).
