‏ Mark 10:17

The Rich Young Ruler

This section tells the story of a rich young man who comes to Jesus with a question about eternal life. Jesus uses this encounter to teach about the cost of following him, the dangers of wealth, and the rewards of discipleship. The passage also highlights the importance of humility, the need for God’s grace, and the difference between human and divine possibility.

v. 17: As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to him, knelt before him, and asked, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? (Mark 10:17 a). The young man showed respect and eagerness, but his question focused on what he could "do" to obtain eternal life, as if it were something to be earned by works. This is a common mistake—thinking we can achieve salvation by our own efforts.
