‏ Mark 15:34

v. 34: Near the end of the darkness, Jesus cried out, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?(Mark 15:34 a). This showed the deep pain in Jesus’ soul as he suffered for our sins. He felt separated from God, not because of anything he had done, but because he was taking the punishment for our sins. This suffering was harder than any physical pain. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice, and just as God’s fire fell on the Old Testament sacrifices (Leviticus 9:24; 2 Chronicles 7:1 b; 1 Kings 18:38 c), God’s judgment now fell on him instead of on us. Jesus felt this separation more deeply than anyone else ever could, because he had always been close to the Father.
