Mat 27:51 | MHM | STEP | v. 51 : At the moment Jesus dies, the veil in the temple is torn from top to bottom. This curtain separated the Most Holy Place from the rest of the temple. Its tearing means that Jesus’ death opens the way for everyone to come to God, not just the priests. It also shows that the old religious system has ended and that Jesus is the new way to God ( see also Hebrews 10:19-20 ). At the same time, there is a great earthquake, and rocks split apart. This shows that something huge and powerful has happened.
