Numbers 33:1: Encampments of the Israelites

This chapter gives a summary of all the places where the Israelites camped during their journey through the wilderness. It is a record of their travels from Egypt to the plains of Moab. This history was important because it showed how God led and cared for them. The record was meant to honor God and to encourage future generations to trust Him. The journey began when the Israelites left Egypt, organized like an army (v. 1 a). Moses and Aaron led them, and God was their true leader. They left Egypt boldly, in full view of the Egyptians, because God had shown His power through the plagues (v. 3 b). The Egyptians were busy burying their firstborn who had died, so they could not stop the Israelites (v. 4 c). God also punished the gods of Egypt, showing that He alone is the true God (Isaiah 19:1 d).

v. 2: Moses carefully wrote down each place where Israel camped and moved (v. 2 e). God told him to keep this journal as a record of His guidance and mercy. Writing down what God does helps us remember His blessings and learn from the past (Deuteronomy 8:2 f).

v. 6, 8, 11, 15: The Israelites moved from place to place, often traveling through deserts and difficult lands. They stayed for a time and then moved again, never having a permanent home (v. 6; v. 8 g; v. 11; v. 15 h). This shows how God took care of them even in hard situations. He sometimes led them through easier places first, then through harder ones, preparing them for bigger challenges. God’s way is always right, even if it doesn’t seem like the shortest or simplest way (Deuteronomy 32:10; Psalm 107:7 i).

v. 14, 16, 38-40: Some special events are mentioned. At Rephidim, they had no water (v. 14 j). At Kibroth-hattaavah, people died because of their craving for meat (v. 16 k). Aaron died at Mount Hor (v. 38, 39 l), and Israel was attacked by Arad (v. 40 m). Each place reminded the Israelites of important lessons from God.

v. 25:1; Ge 50:11: The place called Shittim, where Israel sinned with the people of Peor (ch. 25:1 n), was also called Abel-shittim. "Abel" means "mourning" (Genesis 50:11 o), probably because of the deep sorrow over sin and God’s punishment there. The names of places often helped the people remember what had happened.

Numbers 33:50: The Canaanites Doomed

This passage contains God’s instructions to the Israelites as they prepare to enter Canaan. While in the wilderness, Israel was kept separate from other nations, which helped protect them from idolatry. Now, as they get ready to cross the Jordan, God warns them that they will face new temptations. He commands them to remove everything connected with idol worship from the land. The people must obey these commands if they want to enjoy the blessings of the promised land. If they do not, they will face serious consequences.

v. 52: God tells the Israelites to destroy all remnants of idolatry in Canaan (v. 52 p). They must drive out the people, remove all idols and images, and tear down the high places where false gods were worshipped. They are not allowed to keep any of these things, not even as decorations or curiosities. This is to show that they hate idolatry and to protect themselves from being tempted to worship false gods.

v. 53-54: If the Israelites obey God and keep away from idols, He promises to give them the land of Canaan (v. 53, 54 q). God will make sure they receive their inheritance. They do not need to fear the power of the Canaanites if they remain faithful.

v. 55: God warns them that if they allow any Canaanites or idols to remain, these will become like “pricks in their eyes and thorns in their sides” (v. 55 r). In other words, the remaining people and idols will constantly cause trouble and pain. If we do not remove sinful things from our lives, they will continue to harm and tempt us.

v. 56: Finally, God says that if Israel does not obey, He will punish them just as He planned to punish the Canaanites (v. 56 s). If they follow the Canaanites’ evil ways, God will drive them out of the land too. This is a strong warning: if we do not get rid of sin, it will end up destroying us.
