‏ Proverbs 18:8

The Harmful Words of a Tale-Bearer

This section warns about the damage caused by those who spread gossip and secrets. Their words can seem harmless or even caring, but they are deeply destructive, hurting both the person talked about and the one who listens. Gossip destroys trust and relationships, and even brings harm to the soul.

v. 8: Tale-bearers are people who secretly carry stories from place to place. Sometimes the stories are true, but they are often private or twisted to sound worse. The goal is to hurt someone’s reputation or to cause trouble between friends and neighbors. The words of a tale-bearer are like wounds—they go deep into a person, even hurting the conscience . Sometimes gossip is shared in a way that looks caring, but it is really just spreading evil. The damage can last a long time, making people stop loving or trusting each other.
