Proverbs 2
The Search after Wisdom Encouraged.Solomon explains how we can find true wisdom. He answers the question asked in the book of Job: “Where shall wisdom be found?” (Job 28:12, 20 a). Solomon teaches us both where to look for wisdom and how to get it. He encourages us to use every means possible to gain wisdom, and promises that God will reward those who seek it with all their heart.v. 1–2: To gain wisdom, we must pay close attention to God’s word. My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding (Proverbs 2:1–2 b). We should welcome God’s teachings, keep them in our hearts, and listen carefully whenever we hear His word. True wisdom comes from God’s revelation, and we must value it above all other knowledge. – v. 3: We must also pray for wisdom. Yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding . We should ask God earnestly, like someone who is desperate for help. God wants us to seek wisdom with a sincere and humble heart (1 Peter 2:2; James 1:17 c). v. 4: We must be willing to work hard to find wisdom. If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures . Just as people dig and search for valuable things, we should put effort and energy into learning God’s ways. Wisdom is more valuable than money or anything else in this world. v. 5: If we do these things, we will understand what it means to fear the Lord and truly know God. Then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God . Knowing God and respecting Him is the foundation of all wisdom. v. 6–8: We can be sure of success because wisdom comes from God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6 d). God gives wisdom freely to those who ask (James 1:5 e). He has given us His word to guide us, and He promises to protect and help those who live honestly and do what is right. God stores up wisdom for the righteous and is a shield to those who walk in integrity (Proverbs 2:7–8 f). He will help us stay on the right path and keep us safe as we follow Him. – – v. 9: By following these steps, we will learn how to live justly and fairly with others. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path . God’s wisdom will guide us in every part of life, helping us to do what is right and good. The Benefits Conferred by Wisdom. These verses explain the wonderful benefits that wisdom brings. Wisdom is much better than riches, because it keeps us away from the path of sin, which leads to trouble. If we have true wisdom, it will show in the way we live. Wisdom protects us from temptation and helps us make good choices, especially when we are surrounded by evil influences.v. 10–11: When wisdom fills your heart and knowledge becomes pleasant to you, it will keep you safe. When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you (Proverbs 2:10–11 g). Wisdom must not just fill your mind, but also change your heart and guide your choices. When you value God’s wisdom, you will find real safety and joy. – v. 12–15: Wisdom protects us from people who have evil intentions and corrupt ideas. To deliver you from the way of evil, from men who speak perverse things (Proverbs 2:12 h). These people turn away from what is right and celebrate doing wrong. They try to convince others to join them in sin, and they take pleasure in leading others off the right path (Proverbs 2:13–14 i). Their ways are twisted and stubborn (Proverbs 2:15 j). Wisdom helps you stay away from such people and not to be fooled by their words (Psalm 82:5; 1 John 2:11 k; Romans 1:32 l). – – – v. 16–19: Wisdom also protects us from people who tempt us to break God’s law, like the “strange woman” or adulteress. To deliver you from the strange woman… who forsakes the guide of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God (Proverbs 2:16–17 m). She is not loyal to her husband or to God, and she uses flattery to tempt others. Those who fall for her lies are in great danger, because her path leads to death and destruction (Proverbs 2:18–19 n). It is very hard to escape once you go down that path. This warning also applies to all types of spiritual unfaithfulness and following sinful desires (Ezekiel 17:18; Malachi 2:14 o; Matthew 5:28–29 p). – – – v. 20: Wisdom guides us to follow the example of good people. That you may walk in the way of good men and keep the paths of the righteous . We should choose to follow the right path, just as the faithful did in the past (Jeremiah 6:16; Hebrews 6:12 q; Hebrews 12:1 r). v. 21: Living with honesty and integrity brings security. The upright will dwell in the land, and the perfect will remain in it . If you live a good life, you will find peace, God’s favor, and a lasting place among His people. v. 22: But those who choose wickedness will be cut off. The wicked will be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors will be rooted out of it (Proverbs 2:22 s). Sin leads to ruin, both in this life and the next (Malachi 4:1 t). Let wisdom fill your heart and guide your steps, so you can avoid the path that leads to destruction.
