Proverbs 4
The Value of Wisdom Passed from Father to Child This section is a heartfelt encouragement for young people to listen to the wisdom of their parents, especially their fathers. Solomon remembers how his own father taught him important lessons about life, and now he wants to pass those same lessons on. True wisdom is something that can be handed down from one generation to the next, and it is more valuable than any riches or success in this world.v. 1: Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding . Solomon urges young people to listen carefully to the advice and teaching of their parents. He wants them to pay attention and learn real understanding, not just facts but how to live wisely. To hear is not just to listen, but to obey and put what you learn into practice. v. 2: For I give you good doctrine, forsake not my law . Solomon says that what he is teaching is not just his own ideas, but good instruction that comes from God. These are rules and advice that will help you live well. Don’t turn away from these teachings, because they will protect and guide you in life. v. 3: For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother . Solomon remembers being a young, beloved child in his parents' house. He points out that he, too, was once in need of guidance and love, just like every child. This helps us see that everyone, even wise adults, started as children who needed to be taught. v. 4: He taught me also, and said to me, “Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live” . Solomon’s father gave him advice that he now passes on: keep these wise words deep in your heart. Obeying these teachings will help you have a good life. Real wisdom is not just knowing things, but living by what is right and good. v. 5: Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth . The most important thing is to seek wisdom and understanding. Don’t forget what you have learned, and don’t stop following the path of wisdom. Keep searching for wisdom all your life—it is more valuable than anything else. v. 6: Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you . Wisdom is pictured as a woman who protects those who love her. If you do not leave wisdom behind, she will keep you safe. If you love wisdom, she will take care of you and help you avoid many troubles. v. 7: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding . Of all the things you might try to get in life, wisdom is the most important. It is better than wealth, popularity, or power. Make it your first goal to become wise and to truly understand how to live well. v. 8: Exalt her, and she shall promote you: she shall bring you to honour, when you embrace her . If you respect and value wisdom, she will raise you up and give you honour. Embracing wisdom means to hold her close, to make her your constant companion. When you do this, you will earn respect from others and live a life that is admired. v. 9: She shall give to your head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to you (Proverbs 4:9 a). Wisdom will make your life beautiful and honourable, like a crown placed on your head. People will see the good effects of wisdom in your life, and it will be your greatest reward and honour. – – – – Cautions against Bad Company.Solomon warns us to avoid the path of the wicked. He teaches that if we want to walk in wisdom, we must stay far away from sin and from people who do evil. Keeping away from bad company is important for living a good and safe life.v. 14–15: Do not even start down the path of wicked people. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men (Proverbs 4:14 b). If you find yourself near evil, turn away quickly and get as far from it as you can. Do not try to see what it is like or think you can handle it. The best way to avoid sin is to stay far away from it. – v. 16–17: Wicked people love to do wrong. For they do not sleep unless they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away unless they make someone fall (Proverbs 4:16 c). Doing harm is like food and drink to them. For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence (Proverbs 4:17 d). They are restless until they have hurt someone, and they enjoy causing trouble. This is why it is so dangerous to be around them (Psalm 14:4; Job 15:16 e). – v. 18: The way of the righteous is like a bright light. The path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day . When we follow God’s wisdom, our lives become brighter and better, just like the sun rising higher in the sky. The path of wisdom leads to more joy, peace, and understanding every day (Matthew 5:16; Isaiah 58:8,10 f). v. 19: The way of the wicked is darkness. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble . People who do evil walk in darkness and do not even see what makes them fall. They keep making the same mistakes and do not understand why they have trouble (Psalm 82:5; Job 18:5–6 g). This is why we must avoid their path completely. Parental Instructions. After warning us to avoid evil, Solomon now teaches us how to do what is right. It is not enough to stay away from sin; we must also learn how to live in a way that pleases God. This means paying close attention to God’s word and being careful in all our actions.v. 20–21: We should always listen carefully to God’s wisdom. My son, attend to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart (Proverbs 4:20–21 h). We must welcome God’s teachings, remember them, and keep them close to our hearts. God’s word should guide us in everything we do. – v. 22: God’s words give life and healing. For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh . The Bible is like food and medicine for our souls and bodies. It helps us grow strong in faith and brings healing to every part of our lives (Revelation 22:2; Ezekiel 47:12 i). v. 23: We must guard our hearts above everything else. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life . Our thoughts and feelings shape our actions. If we keep our hearts pure and focused on God, our lives will be good and pleasing to Him (Deuteronomy 4:9; Jeremiah 17:9 j). v. 24: We should be careful with our words. Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and perverse lips far from you . Avoid saying things that are wrong, mean, or untrue. Watch your speech and do not let any evil talk come from your mouth (Psalm 34:13 k). v. 25: Keep your eyes focused on what is right. Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you . Do not let your eyes wander to things that are wrong or distracting. Stay focused on God’s path and your purpose. v. 26: Think carefully about the way you live. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established . Before you act, consider if your choices match God’s word. Make sure your actions are wise and steady. v. 27: Stay on the right path and avoid evil. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil (Proverbs 4:27 l). Be consistent and careful in following God. Do not let anything pull you away from doing what is right.
