Proverbs 9
Wisdom’s Invitation and the Contrast with Folly This section presents wisdom as a woman who builds a beautiful house and invites people to a feast. Her invitation is open to everyone, especially those who are simple or lack understanding. The chapter contrasts the blessings of accepting wisdom’s call with the dangers of following the path of foolishness. It teaches us to choose carefully which voice we listen to—wisdom, which leads to life, or folly, which leads to harm.v. 1: Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn out her seven pillars . Wisdom is described as a woman who prepares a strong and beautiful house with seven pillars. This means her teaching is stable and complete. She has made a place that is safe and welcoming for everyone who wants to learn. v. 2: She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table . Wisdom prepares a feast, showing that her teachings are satisfying and enjoyable. Her table is ready for guests, symbolizing that wisdom is ready to give good things to anyone willing to accept her invitation. v. 3: She has sent out her maidens, she calls from the highest point of the city . Wisdom does not keep her offer secret. She sends out messengers to invite people and calls out publicly so that everyone can hear. Wisdom’s invitation is for all, not just a select few. v. 4: Let all who are simple come to my house! She says to those who lack judgment, Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed (Proverbs 9:4-5 a). Wisdom especially invites those who are inexperienced or lack understanding. She encourages them to accept her help, learn from her, and enjoy the benefits of wise living. v. 5: Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of understanding (Proverbs 9:6 b). Wisdom tells people to turn away from foolishness and choose the path of understanding. By following her, they will find life, safety, and true happiness. – – – – – – – The Invitation of Folly. This passage shows us the contrast between God’s wisdom and the temptations of sin. After hearing how wisdom invites people to godliness, we now see how Folly—sin and foolishness—tries to pull people away from the right path. The tempter is loud and persistent, using pleasure and rebellion against God’s rules to attract the unwary. Many people, sadly, are persuaded by Folly’s invitation instead of Wisdom’s.v. 13: The tempter is described as “a foolish woman.” She represents Folly and carnal pleasure. She is noisy and ignorant, “simple, and knows nothing” . When Folly takes over a person’s heart, it drives out true knowledge and understanding. Sinful pleasures make people forget about God and act without reason. v. 14: “She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city” . Folly waits in public places, making her temptations seen and accepted by many. She acts as if she has authority and tries to make sin look popular and fashionable, so people feel pressured to join in. v. 15–16: Folly targets “passengers who go right on their ways” (Proverbs 9:15 c). She especially tries to tempt young people who have been taught what is right. She calls out to those who are trying to do good, calling them “simple” and saying they need to experience her ways. Sin tries to make virtue look boring or foolish and promises excitement to those who leave the right path (Proverbs 9:16 d). – v. 17: The temptation she offers is this: “Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant” . Sin claims that breaking God’s rules and doing things in secret makes life more exciting. This is a direct challenge to God’s commands, just like Adam and Eve thought the forbidden fruit was “to be desired” (Genesis 3:6 e). People are tempted by what is forbidden and think secret sins will not be discovered. v. 18: But the truth is, “he knows not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell” (Proverbs 9:18 f). Those who follow Folly’s invitation are heading for ruin. Sin may look pleasant, but its end is death and destruction, both in this life and the next (Romans 6:23 g). Solomon warns us to see the danger behind the temptation and stay away from the path of sin.
