‏ Psalms 1

The Happy Man.

This psalm begins by describing the character and blessings of a godly person. It explains what makes someone truly happy in God’s eyes. The psalmist shows that the path we choose in life matters, and true happiness comes from following God, not from joining with those who do evil.

v. 1: The godly person avoids the influence and company of evil people . He does not walk in the advice of the ungodly, stand in the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of those who mock. Instead, he chooses his friends and his path carefully. He stays away from those who ignore God, break His laws, and make fun of what is good. This teaches us that we must be careful who we listen to and who we spend time with (Psalm 119:115 a).

v. 2: Instead of following the wicked, the godly person loves God’s law and thinks about it all the time . He finds joy in reading and meditating on God’s Word day and night. This habit helps him resist temptation and grow in faith (Psalm 119:97 b).

v. 3: The life of the godly person is like a tree planted by streams of water . He is fruitful and healthy, always growing and producing good things at the right time. His “leaf” does not wither, meaning his faith and character stay strong. Everything he does, with God’s help, prospers and succeeds. This is because he is rooted in God’s Word and grace (Jeremiah 17:7-8 c).

Description and Doom of the Ungodly.

This section describes what the ungodly are like and explains what will happen to them in the end. The psalmist makes a strong contrast between the godly and the ungodly. While the righteous are blessed and fruitful, the ungodly have no real strength or stability. Their lives are empty, and their future is sad because they have chosen the wrong path.

v. 4: The ungodly are not like the righteous . Instead, they are like chaff that the wind drives away. Chaff is light, useless, and quickly blown away. This shows that the ungodly have no true worth or stability in God’s sight, even if they seem important in the world (Psalm 35:5 d).

v. 5: The ungodly will not be able to stand in the judgment or be part of the congregation of the righteous . In the end, when God judges everyone, the ungodly will be found guilty and separated from God’s people. They will miss out on the blessings of being with the righteous (Matthew 13:41; Luke 13:27 e).

v. 6: The reason for this is that the Lord knows and cares for the way of the righteous, guiding and blessing them (Psalms 1:6 f). But the way of the ungodly will perish because it leads to ruin. God’s approval makes all the difference, and only those who follow Him will last (Jeremiah 12:3 g).
