‏ Psalms 112:1

The Character of the Righteous

This psalm begins with a call to praise the Lord. Right away, the writer turns to praise the people who belong to God. Any good qualities they have come from God, and all the honor given to them should return to him. It is a blessing to know that there are people in the world who truly fear and serve God, and their happiness comes completely from God's grace. This passage describes what kind of people are truly blessed and what blessings they receive.

v. 1: The person who is truly happy is the one who fears the Lord and delights in his commandments. This means they respect God deeply and love to do what he says. They do not obey like slaves, but like children who trust their father. They enjoy learning, thinking about, and following God's commands. This attitude makes serving God a joy, and they find real happiness in living by his ways (Psalm 112:1; Psalm 1:2 a).
