‏ Psalms 117:1

All Nations Admonished to Praise God

This short psalm has a big message. It calls everyone in the world, not just Israel, to praise the Lord. The apostle Paul explains that this psalm shows how the gospel is for all people, both Jews and Gentiles (Romans 15:11 a). God’s plan has always been to bring people from every nation into his family. The psalm also reminds us why God deserves praise: his mercy is powerful and his truth never ends.

v. 1: The Lord calls all nations and all peoples to praise him. This is different from Old Testament times, when only Israel knew God. Now, through the gospel, people everywhere are invited to worship him. Even those who once opposed God can become his followers. The good news is for everyone—no one is left out (Psalm 117:1; Matthew 24:14 b; Mark 16:15; Revelation 7:9-10 c).
