This is the only way people can truly live for God and keep His commandments. v. 73 : David says, Your hands have made me and fashioned me ; see also Job 10:8 and Psalm 139:15-16 ). He recognizes that God is the one who gave him life and all his abilities. David understands that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14 ). But he also knows that being created is not enough. Because of sin, we need God’s grace to change us inside. So, David prays, Give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments (Psalm 119:73 ). He asks God to help him know and obey His word, so he can fulfill the purpose for which he was made.
