‏ Psalms 12

A Prayer for Help in Times of Widespread Corruption

This psalm gives us wisdom and comfort for difficult times. When evil seems to be everywhere and good people are few, we can find hope in God's promises. The true problem with bad times is not just war or poverty, but a lack of honesty, kindness, and respect for God. David shows us how to pray and trust God when the world feels dangerous and unfair.

v. 1: David begins by crying out, Help, Lord, for the godly man ceases; the faithful fail from among the children of men . The world feels dark when good and honest people are gone, either because they have died or have given up doing right. When there are few true believers, it is time to pray for God's help.

v. 2: He describes how people are dishonest and fake. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak . People lie, flatter, and pretend to be friends, but secretly plan harm. In such times, it is hard to know whom to trust (Micah 7:5-6 a). Sincerity disappears, and even close friends cannot be trusted.

v. 3: David asks God to stop those who use their words for evil. The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that speaks proud things . God will judge those who lie and boast. Even when people seem above punishment, God promises to silence those who spread lies and pride.

v. 4: He points out the arrogance of the wicked. The wicked say, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us? . They believe they can say anything they like and no one, not even God, can stop them. This is both proud and foolish, because God created us and has the right to judge us (Exodus 5:1 b).

v. 5: God hears the cries of those who suffer. For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord . God promises to defend and rescue those who are mistreated. When evil people ignore the suffering of the poor, God will act at the right time to save them (Psalm 102:13 c).

v. 6: God's words are pure and trustworthy. The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times . Unlike people, God never lies or deceives. His promises are always true and have been tested and proven by many generations of believers.

v. 7: David trusts that God will protect His people. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever . No matter how evil the world becomes, God will always keep a faithful group for Himself. He will not let His people be destroyed or led away from Him (Daniel 7:25 d).

v. 8: Finally, he observes that when evil people are given power, wickedness spreads everywhere. The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted (Psalm 12:8 e). When bad people become leaders, sin becomes bold and common. This brings sadness to everyone who wants to do right (Proverbs 29:2 f).

When we read or sing this psalm, we should be sad about the evil we see, thank God for His mercy, and pray that He will make things better in His perfect timing.
