‏ Psalms 121

God Our Keeper

This psalm teaches us to trust God as our powerful and all-sufficient helper. David shows that we should not put our trust in people or things, no matter how strong they seem. He asks, Shall I lift up my eyes to the hills? and realizes that true help does not come from mountains or important people, but from God alone (Jeremiah 3:23 a). We must look past earthly things and focus on God, who is the real source of our help. David may have also meant the hills where the temple stood, showing his desire for God’s special presence. Our help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth, and who is powerful enough to help us in every situation.

v. 1–2: David says, I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2 b). He knows that only God, the Creator, can truly help him. If God helps, no one can stop it. If God does not help, nothing else will work.

v. 3–4: God is always watching over His people. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep (Psalm 121:3-4 c). God is always awake and alert, protecting us at all times, both day and night.

v. 5: The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand . God stays close to us, like a shadow by our side, giving comfort and protection. He is always ready to help us when we do our work.

v. 6: The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night . God protects us from all dangers, both visible and invisible, during the day and at night. Nothing, not even the sun’s heat or the cold of night, can harm us if God is our protector.

v. 7: The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul . God promises to keep us safe from all harm—both the harm we fear and the harm we do not see. He also protects our souls, making sure we are not ruined by sin or trouble.

v. 8: The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore (Psalm 121:8 d). God’s protection covers every part of our lives—when we leave home and when we return, in every journey and every moment. This care never ends; it lasts forever. God will guide us through life, keep us safe in death, and bring us into His heavenly kingdom.
