Psalms 123
Looking to God for MercyThis psalm is a prayer of faith and hope in God, especially during times of trouble. The writer calls God the One who lives in heaven, reminding us that God is powerful and sees everything from above. When life is hard and people ask, "Where is your God?" believers can answer, "Our God is in the heavens." God’s people lift their eyes to Him, just as Jesus taught us to pray to our Father in heaven. We look to God for help, guidance, and mercy, just like servants watch their master’s hand for direction, help, and reward. Even when God corrects us, we wait for His mercy, knowing He is our true protector and provider.v. 1–2: The psalmist says, Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that he have mercy upon us (Psalm 123:1-2 a). This means we look to God for everything—direction, help, protection, correction, and reward. We keep looking to Him until He shows us mercy, because only He can truly help us. – v. 3–4: The people pray, Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud (Psalm 123:3-4 b). They are suffering because others mock and look down on them. God’s people are often treated badly by those who are proud or comfortable in this world (Psalm 35:20; Lamentations 4:1-2 c; Job 12:5 d). But even when people scorn us, we can find comfort in God’s mercy. We do not demand what God should do, but simply ask for His mercy, trusting that He will help us in His time.
