Psalms 128
The Blessings of Fearing the LordThis section explains that living a godly life brings blessings both now and in the future. It teaches that true happiness comes to those who have a deep respect for God and show it by living according to His ways. God promises to bless anyone who fears Him, no matter their background or situation. These blessings are not only for groups or nations, but for each individual who follows God. We are encouraged to trust these promises for ourselves, believing that God is faithful and generous even though we do not deserve His kindness.v. 1: The psalm begins by saying, Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways . This means that people who respect God and follow His commandments will be truly happy. Their lives will show that their faith is real by the way they live. God’s blessing makes them happy now and will make them even happier in the future and for eternity. This is true for every person who fears God, no matter who they are. v. 2: There is a personal promise: You shall eat the labor of your hands; happy shall you be, and it shall be well with you . Godly people will have honest work and will enjoy what they earn. They will not have their food taken away by others or lose what they have worked for. Even if life is not always easy, God’s blessing will make their efforts successful and satisfying. It is a blessing to work and enjoy the results of your own work (2 Thessalonians 3:12 a). v. 3: God also promises joy in the family. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine by the sides of your house; your children will be like olive plants around your table . A loving and faithful wife is compared to a fruitful vine—beautiful, useful, and a blessing to the home (Judges 9:13 b). Children are like young olive plants—healthy, growing, and a source of hope for the future (Romans 11:17 c). It is a joy for parents to have their children with them, safe, healthy, and learning good things. v. 4: The psalm repeats the promise: Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord . This shows that these blessings are sure. We should believe God’s promise, watch for how He keeps it, and be amazed at His kindness to us. v. 5: God’s blessings come from His special presence: The Lord shall bless you out of Zion . Zion was where God’s people worshipped and where God’s presence was especially known. Blessings from God’s presence are the best blessings. God’s people will also see the good of Jerusalem and their own land, sharing in the joy and peace of their nation. v. 6: Finally, the psalm says, Yes, may you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel! (Psalm 128:6 d). Godly people may live to see their grandchildren, which is a special joy and honor (Proverbs 17:6 e). Even more, they will see peace and blessing in God’s people and can hope that faith and goodness will continue in their families for generations.
