‏ Psalms 139:7-13

The Omniscience of God

In this section, David explains that God knows everything about us because He is everywhere. We cannot hide from God, no matter where we go or what we do. God’s presence fills all of creation, and His knowledge covers every part of our lives. David uses this truth to remind us that God’s care and attention are constant, and that we should live with respect and trust in Him.

v. 7-10: David asks, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” (Psalm 139:7 a). He knows that it is impossible to escape God. If he goes up to heaven, God is there. If he goes down to the grave or the deepest place, God is there too. Even if he could travel as fast as the morning light to the farthest sea, God would still be with him, leading and holding him. God’s presence is everywhere in the universe (Jeremiah 23:24 b). Even when people try to run from God, like Jonah did, they cannot escape His reach.

v. 11-12: David says that even darkness cannot hide him from God. He might think, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,” but to God, night shines as bright as day (Psalm 139:11-12 c). Darkness and light are the same to God. No disguise, no secret, and no hidden place can keep us from God’s sight. God sees everything clearly, even what people try to hide.

v. 13-16: David gives another reason for God’s perfect knowledge—God made him. He says, “You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13 d). God created every part of us, even before we were born. David praises God because he is “fearfully and wonderfully made”. God saw him when he was still being formed, and all his days were written in God’s book before any of them happened. This shows that God’s wisdom and power are amazing. We should thank God for our creation and trust that He knows us completely, inside and out (Job 10:11; 1 Corinthians 2:11 e).
