Psalms 145
David’s Psalm of PraiseThis psalm is known as “David’s psalm of praise.” It was likely very special to him, and he sang it often. In the first part of the psalm, David praises God’s wonderful character—His greatness, goodness, and majesty. In the second part, he focuses on God’s rule and how He governs everything. David shows us that praising God should be both our duty and our delight, and that it’s something to do every day and for all time.v. 1-2: David promises to praise and bless the Lord every day. He says, “I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever” (Psalm 145:1 a). David is excited to praise God, not just in worship, but in his daily life. He wants to keep praising God all his life and even hopes that his psalms will help others praise God for generations (2 Chronicles 29:30 b). – v. 3-4: David declares, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3 c). He encourages everyone to praise God’s mighty acts and to tell future generations about how wonderful God is. Even though no one can fully understand God’s greatness, we should still praise Him with all our hearts (Romans 11:33 d). – v. 5-6: David says he will speak of God’s “glorious honour” and “wondrous works” (Psalm 145:5 e). He wants to tell others about God’s amazing deeds and awesome power. David knows that everything in the world shows God’s greatness, from His acts in nature to the way He judges fairly (Psalm 78:3 f). – v. 7: David promises, “They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness” . He says God’s goodness never runs out, and we should always remember and talk about it. But we should also sing about God’s righteousness, because He is fair and just in all He does (Romans 11:22 g). v. 8-9: David describes the Lord as “gracious, full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy” (Psalm 145:8 h). God is good to everyone He has made, and His compassion covers all His works (Exodus 34:6-7 i). God’s mercy is shown in everything He does, and all His creatures can see His kindness. – Grateful AcknowledgmentsIn this part of the psalm, David encourages everyone to give glory to God for His wonderful kingdom. God’s greatness and goodness are not only seen in who He is but also in how He rules. His kingdom is powerful, everlasting, and kind. David teaches us that all creation praises God, but His people, especially, should bless Him with thankful hearts.v. 10: David says, “All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and thy saints shall bless thee” . Everything God has made brings Him praise, but His people (the saints) give Him special thanks, because they know His blessings best. v. 11-12: David explains that God’s people will talk about the glory and power of God’s kingdom. He says, “They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom” (Psalm 145:11-12 j). God’s kingdom is great, powerful, and full of majesty. His people share these truths so others may know and respect God’s rule. – v. 13: David says, “Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations” . God’s rule never ends. Unlike earthly kingdoms, God’s kingdom lasts forever and never fades away. v. 14: David praises God for helping those who are weak or troubled. He says, “The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down” . God supports those who stumble and lifts up those who are burdened. He cares for the weak and gives them new strength (Psalm 37:24 k). v. 15-16: David describes God’s kindness to all living things. He says, “The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. Thou openest thy hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing” (Psalm 145:15-16 l). All creatures depend on God for food and life, and He generously provides for them at the right time (Matthew 6:26 m). – v. 17: David says, “The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works” . God is always just and fair. He never does anything wrong, and everything He does is perfectly right. v. 18-19: David praises God for hearing and answering the prayers of those who truly seek Him. He says, “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them” (Psalm 145:18-19 n). God is close to everyone who prays sincerely. He gives what they need and saves them when they call for help. – v. 20: David says, “The Lord preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy” . God keeps safe those who love Him, but He will judge and punish the wicked. v. 21: David ends with a personal promise and a call to all people. He says, “My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever” (Psalm 145:21 o). David will always praise God and invites everyone everywhere to join him in blessing God’s name forever.
