‏ Psalms 150

An Invitation to Praise God; All Creatures Called to Praise God.

This final psalm is a strong encouragement to everyone to praise the Lord. It may have been written for the Levites, who led worship in God’s house, but it also speaks to all of us as God’s spiritual priests. The repeated calls to praise show that praising God is important and necessary, but it is something we may sometimes forget or do half-heartedly. So we need to be reminded again and again to praise Him with all our heart.

v. 1: The psalmist tells us where praise should come from: Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in the firmament of his power . God should be praised in His house by His people, and also in the heavens, where His glory and power are shown. Even the angels in heaven are called to lead this praise. Whether on earth or in the highest heavens, let God be praised.

v. 2: We are told why we should praise God. Praise him for his mighty acts; praise him according to his excellent greatness . We praise God for all the amazing things He has done—in creation, in caring for people, in saving His children, and in showing His greatness. Our words can never fully match God’s greatness, but we should try our best to praise Him as much as we can.

v. 3–5: The psalmist describes how to praise God—with every kind of musical instrument: Praise him with the sound of the trumpet…with the psaltery and harp…with timbrel and dance…with stringed instruments and flutes…with loud cymbals (Psalm 150:3–5 a). The main idea is that we should praise God with everything we have, doing it with energy and joy. In the New Testament, we are told to praise God with one mind and one voice (Romans 15:6 b). The most important thing is a sincere and thankful heart.

v. 6: The psalm ends with a universal call: Let everything that has breath praise the Lord (Psalm 150:6 c). Every person should use their breath and life to praise God. Even animals and all living things show God’s praise in their own way (Revelation 5:13 d). But people, who have been given special life from God, have the greatest duty to praise Him. As long as we have breath, we should use it to honor God. When we leave this life, we hope to spend eternity praising Him in heaven (Revelation 19:1,3 e). Let us join in the eternal song: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord.
