Psalms 29
The Majesty and Power of God in the StormThis psalm calls on the most powerful people on earth to give glory to God. David sees each clap of thunder as a reminder that everyone, even kings and rulers, should praise the Lord. God deserves honor from all because He is above all, and every talent or authority people have comes from Him. The psalm highlights not only who should worship God, but also how—by giving Him the glory due to His name and worshipping Him with pure hearts and holy actions.v. 1: David calls out, Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and strength. He urges the powerful and influential people to recognize God’s greatness, since even their strength is nothing compared to His. v. 2: He continues, Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Worship means honoring God for who He really is. We must come before God with pure lives and true hearts, because holiness is beautiful to Him. God’s people should gather together, focused on God’s majesty and goodness. v. 3: David describes God’s power: The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters. Thunder and lightning show God’s greatness. When we hear them, we should remember God’s glory and honor Him with awe and respect. v. 4: He says, The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. God’s voice is more powerful than anything in nature. The sound of thunder reminds us how great and mighty God is. v. 5-6: The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars; yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Lebanon. He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn(Psalm 29:5-6 a). God’s power can break even the strongest trees and shake the mountains. Nature itself trembles before Him. – v. 7: The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire. Lightning, with its bright and dangerous energy, is under God’s control. He sends it where He wants. v. 8: The voice of the Lord shaketh the wilderness; the Lord shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh. Even the empty, wild places are shaken by God’s power. There is nowhere His voice cannot reach. v. 9: The voice of the Lord maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory. God’s voice affects even the animals and reveals what is hidden in the forests. In God’s house, His people talk about His greatness and praise Him for His mighty works. v. 10: The Lord sitteth upon the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever. God rules over all creation, even the most powerful forces like the flood. He is King forever and nothing can shake His throne. He was King at the time of Noah’s flood and will always be King. v. 11: The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace(Psalm 29:11 b). God not only shows His power in the storm, but also gives strength and peace to His people. He helps them in trouble and blesses them with peace that lasts forever, even when the world around them is shaken.
