‏ Psalms 33

An Exhortation to Praise God

In this psalm, the writer encourages everyone to praise God. He shares his deep desire for more and more people to join in worship, saying that the more voices praising God together, the more it is like heaven. David reminds us that joyful praise should be at the heart of our worship, and that our songs, thanksgiving, and music should be filled with skill, energy, and sincerity. Praising God is beautiful and fitting for those who are upright and love Him.

v. 1: David calls all righteous people to rejoice in the Lord. He says, Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous . Joy in God is the foundation of true worship, and it is right for those who walk in His ways.

v. 2–3: He urges everyone to praise God with music and singing. He says, Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery (Psalm 33:2 a). David encourages singing a new song for every new blessing, and to play skillfully and with enthusiasm. He reminds us that praise should be both thoughtful and heartfelt.

v. 4–5: David shares his high view of God’s word and works. He says, For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth (Psalm 33:4 b). God is perfectly just and always does what is right. The earth is full of His goodness, and all creation shows His kindness and care.

v. 6–7: David is convinced of God’s almighty power, especially seen in creation. He says, By the word of the Lord were the heavens made (Psalm 33:6 c). God spoke, and everything came into being. He gathered the seas and set boundaries for the waters, showing His control and wisdom.

v. 8–9: Because God is the Creator, everyone on earth should respect and worship Him. David says, Let all the earth fear the Lord (Psalm 33:8 d). He reminds us that God’s power is so great, we should stand in awe and never take Him lightly (Revelation 14:6–7 e).

v. 10–11: David finds peace in knowing that God is in control of the world. He says, The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect (Psalm 33:10 f). Human plans can fail, but the counsel of the Lord standeth for ever (Psalm 33:11 g). God’s plans cannot be stopped, and everything happens according to His wise and eternal will. This truth brings comfort to all who trust Him.

God’s Sovereign Power

In this section, we learn to give God the glory for His control over all people and nations. God watches over everyone, knows every heart, and rules over every power on earth. It is not human strength or wisdom that brings safety or success, but God’s will and favor. True happiness belongs to those who belong to the Lord and trust in Him, because He has chosen them for His own.

v. 12: David declares, Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance . It is a great blessing to know and serve the true God. God cares for His people as His special possession (Deuteronomy 32:9 h).

v. 13–15: God sees every person on earth from heaven. He not only watches us but understands every thought and feeling. The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men (Psalm 33:13 i). He shapes each person’s heart and knows all they do. Our lives and our choices are always in God’s hands (Proverbs 27:19 j).

v. 16–17: Human power cannot save us. David says, There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. A horse is a vain thing for safety (Psalm 33:16–17 k). Armies, strength, and weapons are useless without God. Our trust should be in Him, not in what people can do (Deuteronomy 17:16 l).

v. 18–19: God’s special care is for those who fear Him and trust His love. Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy (Psalm 33:18 m). God saves them from death and provides for them, even in times of need. He will keep their souls alive and safe.

v. 20–21: God’s people wait and trust for His help. David says, Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield (Psalm 33:20 n). They rejoice and trust in His holy name, knowing that God is faithful.

v. 22: The psalm ends with a prayer: Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee (Psalm 33:22 o). We ask God to show us His love, not because we deserve it, but because we trust in Him and His promises.
