Psalms 65
Praise and Blessing for God’s GoodnessIn this psalm, the writer speaks not just for himself, but as the voice of the whole congregation. He begins by giving glory to God, showing thankfulness and faithfulness. The psalm highlights how God deserves praise, hears prayers, forgives sins, welcomes people into His presence, and shows His power and care to all who trust in Him. God’s blessings are for His people everywhere, not just in one place or for one nation.v. 1: The psalmist says, Praise waiteth for thee, O God, in Zion: and unto thee shall the vow be performed . He teaches that God deserves our praise, and we should be ready to thank Him as soon as His blessings come. True praise comes from a thankful heart and is offered in God’s house, among His people. We must also keep our promises to God, not just make them in times of trouble, but fulfill them with sincerity. v. 2: He continues, O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come . God is called the One who hears prayer. Because God listens and answers, people from everywhere will come to Him in their needs. God is able to do more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20 a), and everyone is invited to seek Him (Romans 10:12-13 b). v. 3: The psalmist says, Iniquities prevail against me: as for our transgressions, thou shalt purge them away . He admits that sin is a big problem, too strong for us to overcome by ourselves. But God, in His mercy, forgives and removes our sins. This is a reason for great praise, because only God can truly pardon us (Micah 7:18; Exodus 34:7 c). v. 4: He adds, Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple . Those whom God chooses and brings near to Himself are truly happy. God welcomes them into His presence, and they find real satisfaction and joy in worshiping Him. God’s house is full of goodness, and there is enough for everyone who comes (John 6:44 d). v. 5: The psalmist praises God for His mighty acts: By terrible things in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our salvation; who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea . God sometimes answers prayers with awesome deeds, showing His power and justice. He is the hope and trust of people everywhere, even those far away or in trouble at sea (Psalm 107:27-28 e). No matter where we are, we can trust God to hear us and help us. The Almighty Power of God; Indications of Divine Power and GoodnessThis section of the psalm reminds us how God’s amazing power as Creator and Ruler makes His kindness even more wonderful. God’s strength is seen in the way He holds creation together and in how He cares for the earth and all people. His power and goodness are shown in nature, in daily blessings, and in providing for every living thing.v. 6: God’s power is seen in nature. Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power . God made the mountains strong and keeps them in place. They are called “everlasting mountains” (Habakkuk 3:6 f), but even they are not as firm as God’s promises to His people (Isaiah 54:10 g). v. 7: God also controls the sea and the people. Which stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people . The sea can be wild and loud, but God can quickly calm it (Psalm 107:29 h). In the same way, God can quiet angry crowds or enemies. Even Jesus showed this power when He calmed the storm (Psalm 2:1 i). v. 8: God brings morning and evening. They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice . The regular changes of day and night show God’s power, causing people everywhere to respect Him (Genesis 1:14 j). These daily cycles are also signs of God’s goodness, giving us light for work and darkness for rest. Each morning and evening is a reason to rejoice and to praise God. v. 9: God sends rain to the earth. Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it . God visits the earth with rain, making it fruitful and ready to produce crops for people. Every good thing we receive comes from above, and God prepares the earth to give us food (Job 28:5 k). v. 10: The psalmist continues, Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thou makest it soft with showers: thou blessest the springing thereof . God sends rain to every part of the land, making the soil soft and ready for seeds to grow. The blessing of rain helps the crops to grow strong and healthy (Psalm 72:6 l). v. 11: Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness . God’s kindness can be seen throughout the whole year. Every season is full of His blessings. Wherever God works, He leaves blessing and plenty behind (Joel 2:13-14 m). v. 12: They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side . God’s rain reaches even the wild, unused lands and the smallest hills. Everything in creation benefits from God’s care, not just the places where people live and work (Psalm 114:6 n). v. 13: The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing (Psalm 65:13 o). Because of God’s blessings, the land is full of sheep and grain. The earth seems to rejoice and sing because of the abundance God gives. This harvest is a reason for us to celebrate, praise God, and remember His goodness (Exodus 23:16 p).
