‏ Psalms 98

Sing a New Song to the LORD

This psalm calls us to praise God with a new and excellent song. The focus is on the amazing work God has done through Jesus Christ, which is something never seen before. When God gives us a new heart, He also gives us a new song to sing. This praise should be full of excitement and thankfulness, especially for God’s redeeming love and faithfulness.

v. 1: The psalmist says, Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things . The work of salvation through Christ is truly wonderful. From God’s plan before time began, to the way salvation is completed forever, everything God has done is amazing and worthy of praise. The more we understand it, the more we will admire and celebrate it.

He adds, His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him . Jesus, our Savior, won the victory over sin, death, and Satan by His own power. He went through every struggle and defeated every enemy for us. Christ’s victory is complete and sure. It is God’s strength and faithfulness that brought this victory, especially when Jesus rose from the dead (Colossians 2:15 a).

v. 2: The psalmist continues, The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations . God did not keep His plan secret. Through Jesus and the message of the gospel, God clearly showed His salvation and the way to be right with Him. This good news is for all people, not just for Israel (Acts 10:36 b).

v. 3: He explains, He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God . God kept His promises to Israel and showed them mercy, just as He said He would. Through Jesus, God blessed Israel first, but also made salvation visible to everyone, everywhere (Luke 1:72 c).

An Invitation to Praise.

This part of the psalm shows that the coming of Christ’s kingdom is a reason for great joy and praise. Everyone is encouraged to celebrate and honor God for what He has done. The invitation is for all people, and even for all of creation, to join in joyful worship because of God’s wonderful works through Jesus.

v. 4: The psalmist calls out, Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! . Everyone is invited to praise God loudly and happily. The news of Christ’s salvation is so wonderful that it deserves shouts of joy, singing, and celebration, just like when a new king is crowned (Psalm 95:1–2 d).

v. 5–6: He continues, Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord! (Psalm 98:5–6 e). Our joyful praise should be expressed with music, using both soft instruments and loud ones like trumpets. This music is for God, our King, and should be full of energy and reverence.

v. 7–8: The psalmist invites creation itself: Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together (Psalm 98:7–8 f). Even the sea, rivers, and hills are pictured as celebrating Christ’s rule. All creation is blessed by His coming and joins in the praise. This shows how big and wonderful God’s salvation is—even nature rejoices.

v. 9: He ends with hope, before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity (Psalm 98:9 g). Jesus is coming to set everything right. His judgment will be fair and good, and this is a reason for everyone and everything to rejoice (Psalm 96:11–13 h).
