Revelation of John 5
The Sealed Book This section describes a vision given to John, where he sees God’s plan for the world written in a sealed book. The book is in God’s right hand, showing that He is in control and ready to carry out His plans. However, the book is sealed with seven seals, meaning that God’s purposes are hidden and cannot be known or carried out until they are opened. The number seven shows that there are different parts to this plan, and each will be revealed at the right time. v. 1: John sees “in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals” (Revelation 5:1 a). This book stands for God’s decrees and the way He will govern the world and the church. The fact that it is sealed means that no one knows God’s plans except Him, and no one can make them happen until He allows it. v. 2: John sees a strong angel asking, “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?” (Revelation 5:2 b). The angel’s loud voice is a challenge to all creation—if anyone is wise or powerful enough to explain or carry out God’s plans, they should come forward. But this shows that no creature, no matter how great, is able to do it. v. 3: It turns out that “no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon” (Revelation 5:3 c). Not even the angels, the greatest people, or any spiritual powers can understand or reveal God’s plans without His help. Only God has this knowledge and power. v. 4: John says, “And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon” (Revelation 5:4 d). He is very sad, because he wants to know God’s will and see it fulfilled, but no one is able to do it. This shows how important it is to understand what God is planning for His people and the world. v. 5: But one of the elders comforts John and says, “Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof” (Revelation 5:5 e). This means that Jesus Christ, who is called the Lion of Judah and the Root of David, is the only one worthy and able to open the book. He is both God and man, and as the Savior and King, He alone can reveal and carry out all of God’s plans for salvation and judgment. The Sealed BookThis section describes how Jesus Christ, the Lamb, takes the sealed book from God the Father. This is a key moment in heaven. It shows that God’s plan for the world is given to Jesus to carry out. When this happens, all of heaven and earth celebrate. The church, the angels, and even all creation join together to praise Jesus for His sacrifice, His power, and His love.v. 6–7: John sees Jesus in the middle of the throne, with the four living creatures and the elders around Him. Jesus is both God and man. He is closer to God than anyone else. He appears as a Lamb that was slain, showing His suffering and sacrifice. The Lamb has seven horns and seven eyes, which means He has perfect power and perfect wisdom. The seven eyes are the seven Spirits of God, showing that Jesus has the Holy Spirit in full. Jesus steps forward and takes the book from God’s right hand. He does not take it by force, but because He is worthy and has the right. God gives Him this honor with joy, and Jesus is happy to do His Father’s will (Revelation 5:7 f). – v. 8–10: As soon as Jesus takes the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fall down before Him in worship. They each have harps for praise and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. Their song is new, celebrating the gospel. They sing, “You are worthy to take the book and open its seals” because Jesus was slain and with His blood He bought people for God from every tribe and nation. Jesus did not just set His people free from sin and Satan, but also made them kings and priests. They now have the right to serve God and will reign with Him on earth (Revelation 5:9-10 g). – – v. 11–12: Now the angels join the song. Their number is too great to count. They stand around the throne and praise Jesus together with the church. They say with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing” (Revelation 5:11-12 h). Jesus is worthy of all these things because He has done the hardest work and is faithful in everything. – v. 13: Then, every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea joins in. They sing, “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever” (Revelation 5:13 i). This shows that all creation is thankful for Jesus and what He has done. We praise both God the Father and Jesus, the Lamb, because they are both fully God and have worked together for our salvation. v. 14: The four living creatures say, “Amen!” and the elders fall down and worship again. The church began the song, and as everyone joins in, they end with praise and deep respect before God. This moment shows how the sealed book is given from God the Creator to Jesus the Redeemer, with great honor and worship from all of heaven and earth.
