‏ 1 John 3:4

The Mark of God's Children.

In this section, John gives strong reasons why believers should avoid sin. He explains that sin is completely opposite to the nature of God and the purpose of Jesus’ coming. John teaches that a true child of God cannot continue living in sin, and he shows how to tell the difference between those who belong to God and those who do not.

v. 4: John starts by defining sin: Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4 a). Sin means breaking God’s law. It is going against God’s will and rejecting His authority. This is serious, because God’s law is good and shows us the way to happiness and peace.
