The blood means he takes away our guilt before God by his sacrifice ( without shedding of blood there is no remission , Hebrews 9:22 ). Both are needed for our salvation—cleansing and forgiveness. When Jesus died, both water and blood flowed from his side (John 19:34 ), showing he provides everything needed to save us.
