When God spoke to them with thunder and fire, they were terrified and begged not to hear God’s voice directly anymore (Deuteronomy 18:16,17 ). God agreed, saying he would speak to them through people like themselves, so they would not be overwhelmed with fear. Later, God went beyond this promise when Jesus, the Word, became human and lived among them (John 1:14 ).
