God wanted His people to stay pure and worship Him alone, not mixing His ways with the dark and superstitious ways of the nations around them. v. 9 : The people are clearly told not to follow the abominations of the Canaanites ( v. 9 ). Even though these nations were defeated, their religious habits were still a danger to Israel.
