Fruit trees gave food and were important for life, so they should be protected. Only trees that did not give fruit could be used in the siege. This law teaches us to care for God’s creation and not to waste resources, even in difficult times (Deuteronomy 20:19,20 ). Jesus also taught his followers not to waste what God provides (John 6:12 ).
