God’s people must stay separate from the sinful practices of the nations they will conquer. Moses explains that God will help Israel defeat these nations, but the people must also do their part by destroying idolatry and keeping themselves holy. He reminds them that God chose them to be His special people, not because of their greatness, but because of His love and promise. The covenant with God brings blessing for those who love and obey Him, but judgment for those who reject Him. v. 1-2 : God promises to bring Israel into the Promised Land and drive out seven nations that are stronger and larger than they are. Israel must not make any agreements with these nations or show them mercy. This command was given to prevent Israel from being led astray by their evil practices. God’s power will defeat the nations, but Israel must obey and not be careless or make peace with them (Deuteronomy 7:1-2 ).
