‏ Genesis 1:27

v. 27: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” God made both Adam and Eve, male and female, in His image. He created only one man and one woman at first, showing that all humans come from one family (Genesis 2:21-23; Malachi 2:15 a; Matthew 19:4,5 b). This also teaches that marriage is meant to be for life. Only humans were made to continue their kind by being male and female, unlike the angels (Luke 20:34-36 c).

Being made in God’s image means having a spirit, understanding, will, and holiness. In the beginning, humans were upright and pure, with no sin or disorder (Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10; Ecclesiastes 7:29 d). This likeness to God is a reason to treat each other with respect (James 3:9; Genesis 9:6 e). Sadly, sin damaged this image, but God can restore it through His grace.
