The Canaanites were living in the land at that time, so Abram did not have it to himself. He was a stranger and did not settle there, but moved around. This teaches us that sometimes faithful people must live as strangers, without a permanent home ( v. 6; Ps. lvi. 8 ; Heb. xi. 8-14 ).
