Joseph reassured them by inviting them closer and explaining, "I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt" ( v. 3-4 ). This made them remember their wrongdoing but also gave them hope for his kindness. In a similar way, when Jesus appeared to his followers, he reassured them not to be afraid (John 6:20 ).
