‏ Hebrews 8:10-12

v. 10: God promises in the new covenant to put his laws into his people’s minds and write them on their hearts. This means God will help people understand, remember, and love his laws. They will want to do what God asks, not just follow rules. This change in the heart is the foundation of the new covenant (Hebrews 8:10 a).

God also promises, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. God will do everything for them that a true God can do. The people will love and obey God in return, and God will give them the strength to do so.

v. 11: In the new covenant, everyone will know God for themselves, from the least to the greatest. There will not be as much need for people to teach each other about God, because the Holy Spirit will help everyone understand. In the old covenant, people needed priests and teachers, but now God’s Spirit will teach all believers directly (Hebrews 8:11 b).

v. 12: God promises to forgive people’s sins completely. He says, I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and iniquities I will remember no more. This forgiveness is free and full. God chooses not only to forgive but also to forget their sins. This is a key blessing of the new covenant (Hebrews 8:12 c).
