‏ James 5:1

Warnings to the Rich; Motives to Patience under Affliction

In this section, James gives a serious warning to rich people who are greedy, dishonest, and cruel to others. He tells them that their wealth will not save them from God’s judgment. James also encourages believers who are suffering to be patient and not to envy the rich, because God will punish those who do wrong. He reminds Christians to stay faithful and not to complain against each other while they wait for the Lord’s return.

v. 1: James speaks directly to rich people, saying, “Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you” (James 5:1 a). He warns them that great troubles are coming because of the way they have lived. Their happiness will not last, and their riches will not help them in the day of judgment.
