John 8:31
The Truth Will Set You Free In this section, Jesus speaks to the Jews who had begun to believe in him. He explains what it means to be his true disciple: it is not just believing for a moment, but continuing in his teaching. Jesus shows that real freedom comes from knowing and obeying the truth, and that true freedom is only possible through him. He also explains that everyone who sins is a slave to sin, but he, the Son, has the power to set people free. v. 31: Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples” (John 8:31 a). It is not enough to believe for a little while; true disciples keep following Jesus and obeying his words.
