Judges 12:8-10
Jephthah's SuccessorsThis section gives a brief account of three judges who ruled Israel after Jephthah. Their reigns were short, and the Bible does not record many details about their lives. These quick changes in leadership show that sometimes a nation may have many rulers in a short period because of its troubles (For the transgression of a land, many are the princes thereof, Proverbs 28:2 a). Each judge had different strengths, and their stories remind us that God works through many kinds of people.v. 8–10: Ibzan of Bethlehem became judge and ruled for seven years. He was probably from Bethlehem in Judah, the same city where David was born. Ibzan had a large family—thirty sons and thirty daughters. He made sure all his daughters were married to men outside his family and brought in thirty daughters-in-law for his sons. This shows that Ibzan cared about family and connections. His family was large and happy, which was a blessing from God. Unlike Jephthah, who had only one daughter, Ibzan’s family was increased by the Lord (Judges 12:8-10 b). – –
