‏ Judges 5:1

The Song of Deborah and Barak

This chapter is a song of praise to God for the victory He gave Israel in the last chapter. It teaches us the importance of giving thanks to God when He helps us. Deborah and Barak use music and poetry so that everyone, even those who cannot read, can remember what God has done. This song would be passed down from one generation to another, encouraging people to trust and praise the Lord for His mighty works (one generation shall praise your works to another, Psalm 145:4 a).

v. 1: Deborah wrote and led this song of praise after Israel’s victory. As a prophetess, she used her gift to create beautiful words, full of both power and grace. She was the leader in both the battle and the thanksgiving. She did not want the people to praise her, but wanted everyone to join her in praising God for what He had done (Judges 5:7 b).
