They were afraid to come closer because they might be arrested too. This fulfilled what was written about suffering alone (Job 19:13; Psalm 88:18 ). The women watched but did not yet understand that these events were leading to Jesus’ resurrection. As Simeon had said, Jesus was a sign that would reveal the thoughts of many hearts (Luke 2:34-35 ).
