Christ Insulted and Condemned

This section describes how Jesus was condemned by Pilate and then mocked and abused by the Roman soldiers before his crucifixion. It explains why Jesus had to die on the cross, the suffering and shame he endured, and how even in these painful events, he fulfilled God’s plan for our salvation.

v. 15: Pilate wanted to please the crowd, so he released Barabbas, a criminal, and handed Jesus over to be crucified (Mark 15:15 a). Even though he had already punished Jesus by whipping him, hoping that would satisfy the people, Pilate finally decided to crucify him. This shows how someone can slowly convince themselves to do greater wrongs, starting with smaller ones (Luke 23:16 b).
