Matthew 20:18-19
v. 18: Jesus said, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death. He explained that he would be betrayed and handed over to the Jewish leaders, who would judge him and sentence him to die. Jesus knew exactly what would happen, but he was willing to go through it for our salvation. He also said that he would be delivered to the Gentiles, showing that both Jews and Gentiles would be involved in his death (Ephesians 2:16 a). v. 19: Jesus continued, saying that he would be mocked, beaten, and crucified. But he also promised, on the third day he will rise again. Even though the suffering would be great, Jesus looked forward to the resurrection and the glory that would follow. He wanted his disciples to remember this hope, so they would not lose heart when the difficult times came. Jesus’ example teaches us to look beyond present troubles and trust in God’s promise of future joy (John 13:32 b).
