‏ Proverbs 30:9

v. 9: Agur explains why he does not want to be rich or poor. He says, Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain . If he has too much, he might forget God and become proud, like when Israel forgot God after becoming rich (Deuteronomy 32:15 a). If he is too poor, he might be tempted to steal, which would dishonor God’s name. Agur’s main concern is to avoid sin, not just to escape trouble. He calls God “my God” because he does not want to do anything to offend Him.
