Psalms 139:1-16
God’s Perfect Knowledge of UsIn this psalm, David teaches that God knows everything about us—our actions, our thoughts, and even our secret feelings. Nothing about us is hidden from God. David does not just talk about this truth; he prays about it, showing respect and honesty before God. He makes it personal, saying that God knows him deeply, not just people in general. This knowledge is amazing and beyond our understanding.v. 1: David begins by saying, “O Lord, You have searched me and known me” . He recognizes that God has examined his life completely. God knows everything about him, inside and out. Even though David is a king and people cannot know his heart, God knows him perfectly. v. 2: David says that God knows all his actions, like when he sits down or gets up. God also knows his thoughts from far away, even before David thinks them. Nothing is hidden from God, not even the things David himself might forget (Psalm 33:14 a). v. 3: God knows every path David takes and understands all his ways. God examines his actions and knows the difference between good and bad. Every step David takes is noticed by God, who knows his motives and goals (Psalm 17:3 b). v. 4: David says, “For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether” . God knows every word David says, even before he speaks it. God understands the meaning and reason behind every word. v. 5: David feels surrounded by God’s presence. He says, “You have hedged me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me” . No matter where he goes, he cannot escape God’s attention. God’s hand is always on him, guiding and protecting him. v. 6: David is amazed by God’s knowledge. He says, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it” . God knows David better than David knows himself. This understanding is too great for anyone to fully grasp. God’s knowledge is beyond human reach. The Omniscience of GodIn this section, David explains that God knows everything about us because He is everywhere. We cannot hide from God, no matter where we go or what we do. God’s presence fills all of creation, and His knowledge covers every part of our lives. David uses this truth to remind us that God’s care and attention are constant, and that we should live with respect and trust in Him.v. 7-10: David asks, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” (Psalm 139:7 c). He knows that it is impossible to escape God. If he goes up to heaven, God is there. If he goes down to the grave or the deepest place, God is there too. Even if he could travel as fast as the morning light to the farthest sea, God would still be with him, leading and holding him. God’s presence is everywhere in the universe (Jeremiah 23:24 d). Even when people try to run from God, like Jonah did, they cannot escape His reach. – – – v. 11-12: David says that even darkness cannot hide him from God. He might think, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,” but to God, night shines as bright as day (Psalm 139:11-12 e). Darkness and light are the same to God. No disguise, no secret, and no hidden place can keep us from God’s sight. God sees everything clearly, even what people try to hide. – v. 13-16: David gives another reason for God’s perfect knowledge—God made him. He says, “You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13 f). God created every part of us, even before we were born. David praises God because he is “fearfully and wonderfully made”. God saw him when he was still being formed, and all his days were written in God’s book before any of them happened. This shows that God’s wisdom and power are amazing. We should thank God for our creation and trust that He knows us completely, inside and out (Job 10:11; 1 Corinthians 2:11 g). – – –
