Romans 4:4
v. 4–5: Paul explains the principle of grace versus works. He says, To the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as a debt (Romans 4:4 a). If Abraham had earned righteousness through works, it would not be a gift but something owed to him. However, Paul says, To the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness (Romans 4:5 b). This means that righteousness is a free gift from God, not something we can earn. Even the ungodly can be justified when they put their faith in Jesus Christ.
