‏ Romans 4:9

The Case of Abraham

In this section, Paul explains when and why Abraham was justified by faith. He points out that Abraham was justified before he was circumcised and before the law was given. This teaches us that justification is not tied to rituals or the law, but is available to all who believe, both Jews and Gentiles.

v. 9–10: Paul asks, Does this blessedness come upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? (Romans 4:9 a). He reminds us that Abraham’s faith was counted as righteousness before he was circumcised. This happened in Genesis 15:6 b, but Abraham was not circumcised until many years later (Genesis 17 c). This shows that justification is not limited to those who are circumcised. It also humbles those Jews who took pride in their circumcision, reminding them that Abraham was justified while still uncircumcised.
