2:5 a take away his health (literally strike his flesh and bones): Bones were thought to be the seat of health.
2:6 b spare (literally guard/watch over): God ironically made Satan responsible for guarding Job’s life (cp. 10:13-14 c; 13:27 d; 33:11 e).
